I have been a part time Cantonese Opera performer for a number of years. Recently, I have branch out and started to be more active in this traditional trade.
I must thank my mom for bring me to my first Cantonese Opera Street Show. I still remember those days all the costumes were more glittering as it was hand sewn and made of sequins, thus when the spot light shines onto the costumes - wow! the effect is greater than the current ones which some are machine sewn with threads only. Being a young girl, I like to go there after school and hang around the temporary stage. Normally most people do not watch the afternoon shows as it is hot and the costume is not so pretty compared to the nite performance. I was attracted to the pretty accessories of the 'fah dann' and promise myself I will be on stage one fine day.
Since I am an English/ Bahasa Malaysia educated one, my big problem comes when I started to learn this trade. I cannot read or write Chinese Language but again thanks to many people, they helps me to read the lines. Again I promised myself, I will learn Chinese and still learning as the wordings are quite a large range of words.
